What are broken capillaries?

Broken capillaries often become visible on the cheeks and nose area, appearing as small, spidery, red, pink or blue marks beneath the surface of the skin. Capillaries are small blood vessels that connect the veins and arteries. When the capillary walls narrow or widen too quickly, they can cause the vessel walls to tear. As a result, blood leaks out and a red hue is visible on the surface of the skin.

Most common locations of broken capillaries

Broken capillaries are most commonly found on the face – around the nose, under eyes, and on the cheeks, as well as on the legs, chest, and the back. Treatments vary for each of these locations, including laser facial, sublative skin rejuvenation, and vein removal.

What causes facial redness?

Facial redness commonly occurs due to broken capillaries and rosacea. A hypersensitivity to the sun and other environmental factors can also cause the blood vessels near the surface of the skin to expand and make the skin appear flushed. Symptoms may be triggered or aggravated by extreme shifts in temperature, spicy foods and hot drinks, alcohol, sunlight, exercise, certain skincare products, drugs that dilate the blood vessels, and your emotions.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a fairly common skin condition that causes redness of the face, often associated with easy flushing. It can also cause pimple-like breakouts. Rosacea is a genetic inflammatory disorder with no known cause and is more common in people with fair skin and light eyes.

A hypersensitivity to the sun and other factors cause the blood vessels near the surface of the skin to expand and the rush of circulation to the area make the complexion appear red. When the body notices an injury (in this case, the rush of circulation & dilation of blood vessels) it sends more inflammatory cells to the area in an attempt to fix the problem, which only makes it worse.

Women with fair skin, who are over the age of 30 and have a family history of rosacea are more likely to develop this condition.
