Laser hair removal probably isn’t top of mind when you’re pulling out sweaters and watching the temperature drop in Massachusetts. But if you’d like to spend less time shaving next summer, fall and winter are actually smart times to start.
Why? Because laser hair removal is a process, not a one-time appointment.
Hair grows in cycles, which means multiple treatments spaced over time are generally needed to achieve meaningful, long-term hair reduction.¹ Starting during the cooler months gives you time to work through that process before shorts and swimsuit season comes around again.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Actually Work?
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to target pigment within the hair follicle. That energy is converted to heat, damaging the follicle and inhibiting or delaying future hair growth while minimizing injury to the surrounding skin.
At Stay Beautiful Medspa in Woburn, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, a dual-wavelength laser platform that combines Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths.
Having both wavelengths available allows treatment parameters to be selected based on factors such as skin type, hair characteristics, and treatment area.
Why Doesn’t One Laser Hair Removal Session Get Everything?
Because your hair isn’t synchronized. At any given time, different hairs are in different stages of the growth cycle. Laser hair removal is most effective when hairs are in the active growth—or anagen—phase, when the follicle contains sufficient pigment to absorb the laser’s energy.¹
That’s why you can have a treatment, see a noticeable reduction, and still have new hairs appear later.
They aren’t necessarily the same hairs “growing back.” Different follicles may simply have entered an active growth stage.
How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will You Need?
There’s no exact number that applies to everyone. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that laser hair removal generally requires multiple treatments and that maintenance treatments may sometimes be needed.²
At Stay Beautiful Medspa, a typical initial series may include approximately six to twelve treatments, although your individual plan will depend on your hair, skin, treatment area, and response.
And that’s exactly why starting in fall rather than May makes sense.
Why Are Fall and Winter So Convenient?
Sun exposure is one of the biggest practical considerations with laser hair removal. Tanned skin can affect how safely certain laser settings can be used, and protecting treated areas from UV exposure is an important part of laser aftercare.²
During fall and winter in Massachusetts, areas such as the legs, bikini line, back, and underarms tend to be naturally covered more often. You’re also less likely to be planning a beach weekend every other week.
That can make it easier to follow your treatment schedule and appropriate sun precautions.
What Areas Can You Treat?
Laser hair removal can be performed on many areas of the face and body, including:
- Upper lip and chin
- Neck
- Underarms
- Arms
- Chest
- Back
- Bikini area
- Legs
Whether you’re tired of shaving your legs, dealing with constant underarm stubble, or simply want less hair on your back or chest, the treatment can be customized to the area you’re concerned about.
Does Laser Hair Removal Work on Different Skin Types?
Modern laser technology gives providers more options than were available with earlier generations of devices.
The GentleMax Pro includes both Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths. Nd:YAG lasers, in particular, are commonly used when treating darker skin types because their longer wavelength allows energy to penetrate more deeply with less absorption by epidermal melanin.³
That doesn’t mean every setting is appropriate for every person. Your skin tone, hair color, hair thickness, medical history, and recent sun exposure should all be evaluated before treatment.
Start in Sweater Weather. Thank Yourself in Summer.
If laser hair removal is something you’ve been thinking about, don’t wait until the first hot weekend of the year.
Starting in fall or winter gives you time to complete several treatments, stay consistent with your appointments, and work toward smoother skin well before summer arrives.
