What causes wrinkles?
Wrinkles are caused by a combination of repetitive facial movements, skin laxity, and a loss of collagen. Together, these factors cause lines and folds to become more prominent. As we age, our bodies lose elastin and collagen (which keeps our skin hydrated, firm, and elastic). With repeated facial expressions over time, it becomes harder and harder for our skin to return back to its original “expressionless” state. As a result of aging skin, crow’s feet and frown lines develop, and nasolabial folds become more prominent.
What are crow’s feet?
Crow’s feet, also known as laugh or smile lines, are the given name for the lines around the outer corner of the eyes. As flattering as laugh lines sound, these unsightly lines appear in our early 30s, or earlier if you do not use an effective skin care regimen. Either way, these inevitable lines will appear as we grow older. And unlike other wrinkles or expression lines on the face, crow’s feet can appear to look more pronounced or deeper on the skin.
What are frown lines?
Frown lines, also known as the 11s, are the pronounced lines between the eyebrows. However, often times these unwanted lines also appear above the brow and around the eyes. Frown lines have the added effect of creating an angry or perpetually-tired look. We all want to appear relaxed and approachable, but unwanted furrows between the brows can completely alter the facial expression we intend to give.
What are nasolabial folds?
Nasolabial folds are the deep skin creases that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Also known as smile or laugh lines, they are most visible when you smile or laugh, which is where the more descriptive labels come from. These folds often become more prominent in the early 20s and their appearance is inevitable.
What’s the difference between wrinkles & fine lines?
Fine lines indicate the beginning of the skin’s aging process. They are shallow, small, and may be difficult to detect at first. Fine lines are often associated with repetitive facial movements, such as laughing, frowning, smiling, or squinting. Because they are still superficial, they respond to treatments much faster than deeper wrinkles do.
Wrinkles form when fine lines aren’t addressed. As a result, the fine lines deepen and progress into facial folds and wrinkles. Wrinkles also tend to form in different areas of the face, including the forehead, and neck, whereas fine lines frequently form around and under the eyes and mouth.
